Hummingbird with the racing heart,
I heard you come one day
There at the green garden gate
Your steady wings at play
Over the walls that I had built
To see what you could find
Your colors flicker, flashing past
Racing me through time
The pulse of your humming song
But I have no time for lively games,
no time to dance along
Forward and back, spinning around
Little one so mystique
Flitting amongst the budding bee balm
With sweet nectar upon your cheek
Yet so lonesome, solitaire
No other to befriend
Suckling on fresh sunbeams
In this garden that I tend
Until you have hovered long enough,
Then over the wall you fly
And I, such a fool hearted host
Never said good-bye
